Wireless VoIP posing threat to mobile operators
With the increased competition on the VoIP market, local telephone fee
and long-distance telephone fee was reduced. The same thing happened in
the field of mobile phone. Wireless VoIP (wVoIP) service brings the same
change to the field of mobile telephone.
In a new research report "Wireless VoIP: What Threats to Mobile Operators?",
the writer got the following conclusions:
- Mobile telephone operators will go toward 3G network infrastructure(UMTS
release 6, including IMS structure--based on SIP--and CDMA 2000 EV-DO
Rev. A) and will take measures to face the threat from wVoIP market.
The combination of Broadband, Wi-Fi and cellphone will be the trend
of development.
- Mobile operators will deal with the threat from the wVoIP market with
solution at a lower cost. For example, the user may call unrestrictedly
at a fixed cost (monthly).
- The growth of cellphone, Wi-Fi and WiMAX-based IP service not only
enhanced the development of VoIP but also brought new busienss opportunities.
Skype providing IM software development tool that can be easily combined
with VoIP
Skype says that it has opened its platform, through which people can combine
Skype IM function with other Internet voice telephone software
Skype believes that this will pose a threat to Yahoo, MSN and AmericanOnline.
Uup until now there are 51 million registered users of Skype IM software.
Skype says that this number is twcie as much as that of Yahoo IM software,
and 6 times as much as that of AmericaOnline IM software.
Avaya cooperating with Intel to develop IP telephone solutions for
laptop computers
Avaya signed a contract with Intel. According to the contract, Avaya
will build a new mobile telecom system to optimize Avaya's IP telephone
software that is based on SIP. This software is designed for the laptop
computer based on Intel's next generation of Centrino mobile techniques.
The new product is named as "Napa.". The two companies say that
they will work together to improve the functions of the blueteech equipment
that is combined with soft telephone.
Through the cooperation, Avaya's soft swtich will integrate the functions
of Centrino, such as bandwidth reserving, call control, etc., to guarantee
a reliable service that can meet the standard 802.11e.
The two companies say that the purpose of the cooperation is to make it
possible for the end users to enjoy various applications and IM functions
when using soft telephone controlled by Avaya's telecom management software.
As Yankee anticipates, there are 50 million American workers (about 40%
of the total work force) taking mobile service as a part of their daily
work. By 2008 the so-called "mobile" worker will account for
72% of the total work force.
