eBay's president forecasts: free-of-charge telephone service available
in 3 to 6 years
According to foreign medias, Meg Whitman, President and CEO of eBay forecasts
at a videoconference this Wednesday that in the coming 3 to 6 years people
will enjoy free-of-charge telecom service. That means, the telecom operators
will make money in other ways, such as advertising or charging the "transaction
fee". However, he didn't indicate how the traditional telecom operators
would charge the so called "transaction fee".
As Meg Whitman says, considering the developing trend of Skype in the
next a few years, the number of telephone subscribers that pay telephone
fee will decline gradually, and there will be more and more people enjoying
VoIP service. From then on, telephone service providers will not take
the telephone fee as the major income any longer, but will earn money
in other ways.
Whitman's forecast reflects the development strategy of eBay. After spending
4 billion USD acquiring Skype, Whitman was criticized by some financial
experts. However, some people is still optimistic on this. They think
eBay is in a gamble, trying to be a leader in the field of network telephone,
online auction and online payment by combining the above three kinds of
service.
In Sept. Skype said that the total number of subscribers has reached 57
million. The new owner of it hopes that it can earn 60 millionUSD in 2005,
and 200 million USD in 2006.
