Leader in Speech Recognition Provides Software for Yahoo! By Phone
and Yahoo! Phone Card
MENLO PARK, Calif, February 20, 2002 - Nuance (Nasdaq: NUAN), the leader
in software for a voice-driven world, today announced an agreement with
Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO) to provide speech recognition software for
Yahoo!? by Phone (http://phone.yahoo.com) and Yahoo! Phone Card (http://phonecard.yahoo.com)
services. Nuance and Yahoo! also worked closely together to design the
interface and the voice persona for the Yahoo! by Phone service.
Nuance's speech recognition software enables Yahoo! by Phone users to
navigate through a range of personalized services such as e-mail, voicemail
and the latest news and information by using any telephone and the power
of their voice. Nuance speech recognition software also allows Yahoo!
Phone Card users to make calls by voice accessing personalized Yahoo!
Address Book (http://address.yahoo.com) entries and provides voice-activated
dialing capabilities. Yahoo! by Phone is available by calling 1-800-MY-YAHOO
and Yahoo! Phone Card calls can be initiated through 1-800-44-YAHOO.

Yahoo! chose Nuance to provide speech recognition software for its Yahoo!
by Phone and Yahoo! Phone Card services for its accuracy, scalability
and reliability. Both these services were built using VoiceXML, the industry
standard markup language for voice applications.
In addition, Nuance's voice interface design consultants and the Yahoo!
Everywhere team created the persona for Yahoo! by Phone and Yahoo! Phone
Card — giving the services an engaging audio "personality" to help increase
usability, aid in consumer adoption and help drive repeat usage of the
application. "
